smartSDH: An Experimental Study of Mechanism-Based Building Control

As Internet of Things technologies are increasingly being deployed, situations frequently arise where multiple stakeholders must reconcile preferences to control a shared resource. We perform five-month long experiment dubbed “smartSDH” (carried out in 27 employees’ office space) users report their for the brightness overhead lighting. smartSDH implements modified Vickrey–Clarke–Groves (VCG) mechanism. assesses feasibility VCG mechanism context smart building and evaluated smartSDH’s effect using metrics such as light level satisfaction, incentive energy consumption. After initial eight weeks, we noted that average satisfaction with levels dropped from 3.44 2.94 on 5-point Likert scale incentives 3.57 3.16. This indicates participation burnout not typically captured by theoretical analyses mechanisms. Additionally, our reduced consumption 35.22% over period, without directly incentivizing lower consumption, which provides evidence much current may be wasteful. Finally, observed environmental readings had statistically significant relationships lighting users, indicating promise learning other observable factors.
